NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Rev. Francis M. Walsh, C.S.C., 87, died at Holy Cross House in Notre Dame, Ind., on Saturday, July 15, 2017.

He was born on May 28, 1930 in Wilkes-Barre, Penn., to Frank M. and Sarah (Gildea) Walsh. After completing his education in Wilkes-Barre, he enrolled in Our Lady of Holy Cross Seminary in North Easton, Mass. in 1948. He entered the Novitiate of the Eastern Province of Holy Cross Fathers on August 15, 1950, professed First Vows at North Dartmouth, Mass., on August 16, 1951, made his Final Profession on August 16, 1954 and was ordained to the priesthood on October 28, 1956.

Following completion of the A.B. degree in philosophy at Stonehill College in 1953, Fr. Walsh was assigned to theological studies at the Gregorian University in Rome. He received the S.T.L. in 1957. In addition to his theological studies, Fr. Walsh did graduate work at Fairfield University and Boston College in counseling and psychology. He received the Ph.D. in psychology from Boston College in 1977.

Fr. Walsh's first assignment as a priest was to Notre Dame High School in Bridgeport, Conn., in 1957. He taught Latin and Religion and served as a counselor in the guidance department. Since 1966, he served as a member of the faculty of Stonehill College as a psychology professor and as a member of the Counseling Center there. He moved to Holy Cross House in 2013.

Preceding him in death are his parents, Frank and Sarah Walsh; brother, William J. Walsh; and nephew Matthew J. Walsh. He is survived by his sister, Patricia Fennell, of Kingston, Pennsylvania, and brother, John J. "Jack" (Michelle) Walsh, of California, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday (Jul. 23, 2017) at the Chapel of Mary, Stonehill College, Easton, MA with a Wake Service at 7:30 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday (Jul. 24, 2017) at the Chapel of Mary, Stonehill College, Easton, MA. Burial will follow at the Holy Cross Community Cemetery at Stonehill College. Kane Funeral Home of Easton, MA, is in charge of the arrangements.
