Heart Emblem

Remembering the Life and Legacy of Kathleen M. (Hurley) Sevigny

Kathleen M. Sevigny, 66, entered into rest on May 7, 2017 at home in Dover, MA surrounded by her loving family. Kathleen was born on January 11, 1951 in Boston, MA to Albert Hurley and Geraldine Page Hurley. Kathleen was a resident of Dedham, MA from 1985 to 1999. Kathleen and her husband Arnold moved to Dover, MA in 1999.

Kathleen was class valedictorian of the 1968 graduating class of Oliver Ames High School. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Bates College, Kathleen earned a BA degree in French in 1972. Kathleen's passion for education shone through as she earned an MBA in Accounting from Babson College in 1975, an MS in Accountancy from Bentley College in 1980 and an MS in Finance from Bentley College in 1989. Kathleen received professional licensure as a Certified Public Accountant, she was also a Certified Management Accountant and a Certified Internal Auditor. After eight years working in private industry, Kathleen dedicated herself to education. Kathleen was a founding faculty member of Bridgewater State University's Accounting & Finance program and taught as a Professor of Accountancy for 32 years before retiring in 2015. Kathleen's colleagues described her as dedicated, smart, funny, sincere, loyal, honest and so generous with her time and generous with her spirit. Kathleen was immensely proud of her students and was honored to receive countless messages from accounting students who credited their professional success to Professor Sevigny and the accounting program that she helped to build and worked tirelessly to nurture. In 2002, Kathleen received the DiNardo Award for Excellence in Teaching from Bridgewater State University.

Kathleen loved spending time with her family. She also loved to travel, spend time at her home in Prince Edward Island and cheer on all of the Boston sports teams, especially the Boston College Eagles. Kathleen suffered from Parkinson's for three years and Arnold faithfully served as her caregiver until her death.

Kathleen is survived by her loving husband Arnold Sacks, daughters Erin and Alissa Sacks, grandsons Justin Griffiths and Aiden Sacks, sisters Geraldine White, Susan Hurley, Mary and her husband Joseph Malinosky and Margaret and her husband Adrian Dawson, brothers Daniel and Cathy Hurley, David and Nancy Hurley and John Hurley: a brother-in-law Edward Sacks; and many nieces and nephews. Kathleen was preceded in death by her parents Albert and Geraldine Hurley.

Interment will be private and a memorial service will take place at 2pm on June 3rd at First Church and Parish, 670 High Street in Dedham, MA. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations in Kathleen's memory to the Kathleen M. Sevigny endowment fund at Bridgewater State University Foundation, PO Box 42, Bridgewater, MA 02325.
