A gifted guitarist, bass player and vocalist, he was a music writer and had his own home music studio. In the 1980s, he played in a band called Harvest and would often play at various weddings and functions.

A handyman, he enjoyed wood carving, archery, and had a great appreciation for nature.

In addition to his wife Phyllis, he is survived by two sons, Dustin I. Nichols of Dana Point, CA., and Joshua D. Nichols of Rochester, NY; and two grandchildren, Grant W. Nichols and Lucas K. Nichols both of CA. He was the brother of the late Kenneth Nichols and Daniel Nichols.
